How to Become a Licensed Lash Artist in California
Are you interested in becoming a professional lash artist in California? In the state of California, you need either a Cosmetology or Esthetician license to apply lash extensions legally. Here’s a quick overview of the process:
Picking a Career Path
To offer Lash Extensions legally, you must have a cosmetology license or an esthetician license in the state of California. Deciding between the two is a personal choice based on interests and time availability.
Cosmetology License: Requires 1,000 hours of study.
Esthetician License: Requires 600 hours of study.
Cosmetology programs generally cover a broad range of beauty skills—such as hair cutting, coloring, styling, and nail care—requiring more hours of training. Esthetician programs, on the other hand, focus specifically on skin care treatments (like facials, waxing, and brow services).
Steps to Becoming a Licensed Lash Artist
1. Enroll in a State Approved Program
Choose a state-approved school or training center. Whether you go for the more comprehensive cosmetology program or focus on skin care with esthetics, you can seek out a program that teaches lash application techniques so you are ahead of the curve!
2. Pass the State Board Exams
Once you’ve completed the required hours, you’ll need to pass a written exam to prove your skills and knowledge.
3. Obtain Your License
After passing your state exam and taking a lash extension certification course, apply for your license through the California Board of Barbering and Cosmetology or Esthetics. With that in hand, you’re officially ready to take clients as a licensed lash tech!
