How to Become a Licensed Lash Artist in Kentucky

Thinking about becoming a lash artist in Kentucky? If you want to apply lash extensions professionally, the state requires you to be licensed. In Kentucky, you have a few different license options that allow you to legally perform lash services, including cosmetology, esthetics, and even a dedicated eyelash specialty license. Here’s what you need to know to get started.

Requirements for Lashing in Kentucky:

To legally apply lash extensions in Kentucky, you’ll need to complete one of the following programs:

  • Cosmetology License: Requires 1,500 hours of training. This path gives you a broad education covering hair, nails, skin, and lash application. It's ideal if you're looking to offer a full range of beauty services.

  • Esthetician License: Requires 1,000 hours of training focused on skincare, facials, waxing, and lashes. A great option if you want to specialize in skin and lash services.

  • Eyelash Specialty Permit: Requires the artist applying to obtain a lash training certificate and complete a 3 hr infection control course. This is the most direct route if your goal is to only offer lash services.

Steps to Becoming a Licensed Lash Artist in Kentucky

1. Choose and Enroll in a State-Approved Program
Select the license path that fits your goals and enroll in a Kentucky-licensed beauty or specialty board-approved school. Be sure the program includes hands-on lash training, safety procedures, and sanitation practices. If you’re only interested in lashes, then the specialty permit will be the quickest route. But, if you ever decide to do work beyond lash extensions, already having your Cosmetology or Esthetician license will be helpful.

2. Complete the Required Training Hours and Pass Your Exams
Once you’ve completed your program, you’ll need to pass both written and practical exams administered by the Kentucky Board of Cosmetology. These will assess your understanding of safe practices and your technical skill with lash applications.

3. Apply for Your License
After passing your exams, you’ll submit an application to the Kentucky Board of Cosmetology, along with proof of your training and exam results. Once your license is issued, you’re officially able to offer lash extension services in Kentucky.
