What Are D Curl Lashes?

When it comes to lash design, artists have so many curl choices at their fingertips. It’s important to know how each curl functions within a lash design, and how using them can change the final look. The possibilities are almost endless - from using the same curl throughout a set, to mixing multiple curls into the same set - and each curl shape serves its own purpose.

One of the more common curls in the lash industry is the D Curl. D curl lashes are synonymous with drama. Because of their strong bend from base to tip, D curl lashes are often used to create dramatic looks.

What Are D Curl Lashes?

We often compare the shape of the D curl extension to the actual letter “D”. From base to tip, it mirrors the bend in the letter. As compared to the other curls that we offer, D curl is the most curly. Just take a look at our curl diagram here:

When a D curl is placed on a natural lash, it instantly provides a lifted effect. Because of this, D curl tends to be the most noticeable curl, often accentuating the eyes and giving a glamorous effect. When the lash line is lifted, it draws attention and creates a bold and dare we say, dramatic look.

How D Curl Lashes Compare to Other Curls

C curl lashes are the most relaxed curl and tend to provide the most subdued, natural look. CC curl are slightly more curled from base to tip than C curl, and are considered to be the most universally flattering as they fall somewhere between relaxed and super curled. C, CC, and D curls all have a bit of a rounded base, where the extension will ultimately be bonded to the natural lash, but where L+ and M curl differ is right in that area. The base of these specialty curls is straight and then the rest of the extension curves beyond the base.

When working with these dramatically shaped D curl lashes, it’s important to know how they will affect the final lash design. To create a balanced and flattering look, we typically recommend avoiding using D curl on round eyes. Also, using a D curl can become a problem on a monolid or hooded lid as it can curl back too much and rest on the lid skin. This not only can cause discomfort to the guest but also can lead to an undesired result.

When to Use D Curl Lashes

D curl lash extensions have a great purpose outside of daily wear as well. Because of their dramatic tendencies, they’re great for special occasions or editorial looks - whenever the cameras will be out, add a D curl!

The general guideline to remember is that anywhere you want to achieve lift is where a D curl can be placed. For example:

  • If a guest has an area of the upper lid that is downturned, add a D curl.
  • If a guest has downward facing or straight lashes, add a D curl.
  • If a mature guest is looking for the lashes or eyes of their youth, add a D curl.

Application Tips

When starting to add D curls to your lash stash, there are some helpful Pro Tips to keep in mind. When mapping, switch to the D curl in the outer 2-3 sections of your lash design, to provide lift in the outer corners. Also, keep in mind that CC and D curls are the most similar in their curl pattern, and therefore blend together most seamlessly.

As with any curl a lash artist uses, purposeful placement is essential. Because of the stronger bend of the D curl, pay close attention to your wrist angle while placing. With the signature Borboleta 3-finger grip on the placement tweezer, your wrist should be angled in such a way that the tweezer is almost straight up and down.  The most important thing to remember while placing D curl extensions is that a base to base bond is going to be the strongest bond, so be sure that the first ½-1 mm of the base has been dipped into adhesive and then locked completely flush and securely to the base of the natural lash.

D curls are a favorite for both clients and lash artists alike. Whether you have a first-timer who is bold and daring, or a longtime guest who wants to push the limits of their fill, D curl is the perfect choice.
